It was an exciting morning for the Newsdesk at Mayfield…..what would the morning bring?  What would we see happening in the skies above our school?

The Newsdesk reports:

On Friday 20th March we had the chance to watch a partial solar eclipse in the skies above our school.  We had been made aware the eclipse would occur in our area between 8:30am and 10:30am.

The Newsdesk reporters decided it would be good to watch from the Kilns near our school.

We walked up the hill and set up our base.

“This was an exciting experience as we got to see what was happening during an eclipse for the first time.” Casey P4

We made pinhole projectors so as we could see the eclipse safely.  We couldn’t look directly at the sun because it could blind us or damage our eyes.

We were looking around us to see if the eclipse was happening.  There were lots of shadows being created, the temperature dropped and it became quite cold.  The winds picked up and made things blow around.  The birds that had been chirping loudly disappeared and things were fairly quiet.  We thought it would go dark but it didn’t go as dark as we thought it just went dull.  Taylor didn’t need to use her tealight candle after all.

“I felt worried at the start as I thought it would get really dark and I was scared I would lose my friends but once I saw the whole thing I didn’t need to be worried after all.” Taylor P5

We used our pinhole projectors to see the reflection of the sun and eventually saw the shadow of the moon almost cover the sun completely.  This shocked some of us because the shadow it made was very clear and we realised that an eclipse was happening above us.

“I was surprised when I saw the eclipse through my pinhole but it wasn’t as dark as I expected.  I feel very lucky to have experienced this and we won’t have another chance to see it for years”.  Abbie P5/6

“I was surprised to see the eclipse for the first time.  It wasn’t what I expected because it wasn’t that dark.” Poppy P4
